Context and Justification

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the United Nations in 2015, established the fight against poverty (SDG 1) and the eradication of hunger (SDG 2) as fundamental pillars of human dignity. However, the current situation, with less than five years until the deadline, is critical. Progress reports for 2025 indicate that the world is far from achieving these goals, with only a small percentage of indicators on track.

Recent scientific literature points to a "polycrisis" that has reversed decades of progress. The COVID-19 pandemic, combined with geopolitical tensions, intensifying climate disasters, and mass consumption, among other factors, have caused a resurgence of hunger to levels not seen since 2005. It is estimated that by 2025, more than 800 million people will still be living in extreme poverty, requiring upward revision of projections due to food inflation and systemic crises.

Therefore, researchers and/or experts are INVITED to submit original manuscripts addressing theoretical discussions, practical solutions, case studies, and structural analyses aimed at achieving the goals set by SDGs 1 and 2, considering their cross-cutting relationship with the remaining SDGs in their social, economic, and environmental dimensions.

Thematic Areas:

1. Food Security, Environment, and Stakeholders (SDGs 2, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16): Climate change acts as a threat multiplier, as extreme events (droughts and floods) directly affect agricultural productivity and raise food prices. Sustainable production and the resilience of food systems among small producers are crucial for guaranteeing food security, as is the attitude of stakeholders toward responsible production and consumption that respects their environment.

2. Social Protection and Multidimensional Poverty (SDGs 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 10): The literature highlights that isolated interventions are insufficient. Effective public policies require a multisectoral approach that integrates family income transfers (such as Bolsa Família in Brazil, remittances in Mexico) for the development of rural infrastructure, nutritional support, access to education, health, resources, etc., narrowing the inequality gap.

3. Intersectionality, Equality, and Justice (SDGs 5, 8, 10, 16): The fight against poverty cannot ignore gender, racial, or regional inequalities. Hunger disproportionately affects women and children in developing countries, leaving them excluded from access to decent, economically rewarding work that also dignifies them as people, perpetuating their condition of inequity and injustice.

4. Stakeholders and Governance (SDGs 16 and 17): The context of the hunger and poverty problem is becoming increasingly complex due to its multidimensional, multifactorial, and systemic nature, compounded by the constant threat of global instability. This requires a joint strategy among committed stakeholders and a strong institutional governance system to drive, coordinate, and oversee all actions and resources directed at reducing hunger and poverty. A reference point is the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty initiative, promoted by Brazil in 2024, which underscores the need for international partnerships and a reform of global governance to fund local actions.
